SS-31.
The sequence is D-arginine, 2',6'-dimethyltyrosine, lysine, phenylalanine, finished with a C-terminal amide. Read in order, it alternates a positively charged residue with an aromatic one. Dimethyltyrosine, a tyrosine with two added methyl groups on its ring, is the residue that marks the whole series.
SS stands for Szeto-Schiller, after Hazel Szeto and Peter Schiller, who designed these peptides. The pattern leaves SS-31 both cationic and lipophilic, a pairing rarely seen in a peptide. It is freeze-dried and sold in 10 mg and 50 mg vials.
